Quick Start: Get your Trezor® up and running

This guide helps you initialize a Trezor device with best-practice security. Read every step before you begin, back up your recovery seed, and never share it.

Open Trezor Suite Setup Steps

Trezor device Example: Trezor Model T

Step 1 — Unbox & inspect

When your Trezor arrives, check the packaging and tamper seals. Only buy devices from the official Trezor store or an authorized reseller to avoid compromised hardware.

  • Contents typically include: the Trezor device, USB cable, recovery card, and quick start leaflet.
  • If packaging looks tampered with, contact the seller or Trezor support immediately.

Step 2 — Install Trezor Suite (official)

Trezor Suite is the official desktop/web app to manage your device. Always download it from trezor.io/start or use the official desktop installer.

  1. Open trezor.io/start in your browser and choose Trezor Suite.
  2. Download the desktop app for Windows, macOS, or Linux, or use the web app if you prefer.
  3. Install and open Trezor Suite.

Security tip: Verify the website certificate and URL. Never follow random links from forums or social media.

Step 3 — Connect your device

Use the supplied USB cable to connect your Trezor to your computer. The device will boot and display a welcome message. Confirm prompts on the device (not only in the app).

  • The boot screen will show the device model and firmware version.
  • Only interact with prompts directly on the Trezor touchscreen or buttons to approve sensitive actions.

Step 4 — Initialize & create your wallet

Choose between creating a new wallet or restoring from a recovery. If you are new, create a new wallet and write down the recovery seed exactly as shown.

  1. In Trezor Suite, select Create new wallet.
  2. Your Trezor will display a 12, 18, or 24-word recovery seed depending on model and options — write every word on the provided recovery card.
  3. Confirm your seed words on the device when prompted.

Never store your seed digitally (photos, text files, cloud backups). Physical copies are the safest—consider using a steel backup plate for long-term durability.

Step 5 — Update firmware

After initialization, Trezor Suite may prompt you to install the latest firmware. Keep firmware updated—it's the primary way Trezor ships security improvements.

  • Follow on-screen instructions; the device will verify firmware integrity before applying.
  • Do not disconnect the device during firmware installation.

Step 6 — Add accounts & manage assets

Use Trezor Suite to add accounts for Bitcoin, Ethereum, and many other supported coins. Each account connects to the device for transaction signing.

  1. Click Add account and select the cryptocurrency.
  2. View receive addresses on both the Suite and confirm them on your device before sharing.
  3. To send funds, create a transaction in Suite and confirm details on your Trezor.

Step 7 — Secure backup & recovery

Your recovery seed is the only backup that can restore your funds. Store it in multiple secure physical locations if needed and consider the following:

  • Use a fireproof, waterproof storage solution (e.g., steel plate).
  • Don’t label the seed with obvious tags like "Bitcoin seed".
  • Consider a geographically separated backup if you hold significant funds.

Security best practices

  • Only use official Trezor Suite and firmware from trezor.io.
  • Never enter your recovery seed into any website or software — recovery is done on the device only.
  • Keep your computer malware-free; use trusted OS builds and updated antivirus.
  • Enable passphrase protection if you want an additional layer (notes below).

Passphrase note: A passphrase (BIP39 passphrase) can create an additional hidden wallet. Be careful: if you lose the passphrase, funds are irretrievable. Use passphrase only if you understand the tradeoffs.

Troubleshooting & common questions

Q: My device is not recognized — what should I do?
A: Try a different USB cable/port, ensure Trezor Suite is up to date, and check OS permissions. Reboot the computer and reconnect. If problems persist, consult official support.
Q: Can I restore my wallet on another Trezor?
A: Yes — use the Recover wallet option on the new device and enter your recovery seed in the order shown.
Q: Is Trezor compatible with third-party wallets?
A: Yes. Trezor works with many wallets through integrations (e.g., Electrum, MyEtherWallet). Always confirm the integration is official and follow Trezor’s guidance.

FAQ — Important reminders

Never share your recovery seed with anyone. Trezor staff will never ask for your seed. If someone asks for it, it is a scam.

For ongoing security, periodically review your backup strategy and keep firmware/software up to date.
